Supporting Academic Growth

Overview

This project connects volunteers and community partners with students from Benton Harbor Elementary School, offering tutoring support in various school subjects. The goal is to strengthen students’ academic growth, build confidence in learning, and foster positive relationships between the community and local schools.

Target Audience

Students from Benton Harbor Elementary School who need academic support in any subject area (math, reading, science, social studies, writing, and others).

How It Works

  • Volunteers and community partners select a subject they feel comfortable teaching or assisting with.
  • Flexible scheduling allows volunteers to choose time slots that work for them and the students.
  • Tutoring can take place in-person at Benton Harbor Elementary School, with the possibility of expanding to community spaces if needed.
  • Sessions focus not only on academic improvement but also on developing learning habits, study skills, and encouraging students to believe in their abilities.

Volunteer Profile

We welcome individuals from diverse backgrounds who are:

  • Passionate about education and helping students succeed.
  • Comfortable working with elementary school-aged children.
  • Able to commit to at least one tutoring session per month (weekly sessions are encouraged).
  • Willing to work collaboratively with school staff and project coordinators.
  • Background checks will be required for all volunteers.

Community Partners’ Role

Local organizations, churches, businesses, and college students are invited to partner with the project by:

  • Recruiting volunteers from their networks.
  • Offering training, materials, or incentives to volunteers.
  • Providing snacks, supplies, or learning materials for tutoring sessions.
  • Promoting the project to raise awareness and community involvement.

Expected Results

  • Improved academic performance for participating students.
  • Strengthened community-school relationships.
  • Increased student confidence and motivation to learn.
  • A growing network of community members actively involved in education.
