Overview
The Christmas Sponsorship Program is a heartfelt initiative led by Our House of the Way, focused on bringing joy and hope to families in Benton Harbor, MI who are facing financial hardship. Every year, we register families in need—many of whom are struggling to afford even basic necessities—and connect them with sponsors from the community who are willing to help.
How It Works
Family Registration:
Families living in Benton Harbor, especially those experiencing financial difficulties, are invited to submit Christmas letters written by their children. In these letters, children share their holiday wishes—things they need, gifts they dream of, and even heartfelt messages to Santa.
Finding Sponsors:
Our House reaches out to the wider community—individuals, families, businesses, and organizations—to find sponsors willing to “adopt” a family or a child for Christmas. Each sponsor receives a child’s letter along with their wish list.
Gift Selection and Delivery:
Sponsors choose which gifts they would like to purchase from the wish list, and then either deliver the gifts directly to the family or drop them off at our Office (175 Territorial Rd, Benton Harbor). Our volunteers then coordinate deliveries or organize a joyful family pick-up event.
Spreading Joy and Building Community:
Beyond the gifts themselves, this project fosters deeper connections within the community. Families feel seen, valued, and supported, while sponsors experience the joy of giving and the beauty of shared humanity.
Why It Matters:
This project is about much more than presents. It’s about offering hope, restoring dignity, and building bonds between families, neighbors, and compassionate people from all walks of life. Every gift carries a message: “You are not alone. Your community cares about you.”
Completely Volunteer-Driven:
It’s important to highlight that Our House of the Way is run 100% by volunteers. Every step—from collecting family registrations to organizing deliveries—is done with love, dedication, and no financial compensation. This is a project driven by faith in action and compassion in practice.
Looking Ahead to 2025:
As we prepare for the next Christmas season, our goal is to reach even more families and inspire more people to become sponsors. Together, we can make sure every child feels the magic of Christmas, no matter their circumstances.
