Connection with Mother Nature, Environmental Education & Community Building

VISION

The Community Garden was created as a blessed space in the heart of Benton Harbor — a welcoming call especially to unhoused individuals and volunteers who come together to grow fresh produce, flowers, and herbs during the warmer months.

More than a place to enjoy nature, the garden is a sacred ground for prayer, reverence for Mother Earth, and reconnection with God. It is fertile soil where seeds are planted — but also a space for learning, sharing, and caring for one another.

This sacred space promotes not only environmental education and sustainable growing practices, but also the building of a more just, compassionate, and spiritually connected community.

Together we will plant much more than seeds—we will plant healing, knowledge, and hope for Benton Harbor’s next generation

Collective Planting and Harvesting

  • Growing vegetables, herbs, and fruits.
  • Planting flowers and medicinal herbs.
  • Sharing the harvest with participants, helping strengthen food security.

Educational Space - opportunity for all ages

Activities for children, youth, and adults — promoting environmental education, creativity,  skills, and a deeper connection to nature through hands-on experiences, gardening workshops, and interactive sustainability lessons.

Children learn the importance of caring for Mother Nature — from not littering in the streets, to saving water, respecting animals, understanding the role of plants and insects, and more.

Through partnerships with local schools, we aim to engage both children and their families in building a lasting environmental awareness.

Proposed Activities for Our
Community Garden

We envision our garden as a space where the human spirit reconnects with nature and God — a place of peace, learning, and shared growth. Among the experiences we wish to offer:

  • Gardening workshops for all ages — learn to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers with love and purpose.
  • Sustainability and environmental care classes — covering composting, recycling, and creative reuse of materials.
  • Outdoor art sessions — painting, nature-inspired crafts, and creative expression using organic materials.
  • Storytelling and reading circles — children gather under the trees to listen, dream, and share stories.
  • Prayer moments and conversations about Jesus — cultivating not only the soil, but also the soul, as we explore God’s presence in nature.

Through each activity, we aim to nurture a deeper connection between people, the Earth, and the Divine.

Connection

Our Community Garden is more than a green space—it is a space of transformation, where unhoused neighbors are not only welcomed, but empowered as stewards of growth. From the first shovel in the soil to each new seedling planted, it is their hands that shape this living sanctuary.

Together we will plant much more than seeds—we will plant
healing, knowledge, and hope for Benton Harbor’s next generation.
